My daughter Callie was diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes in the spring of April 2005 when she was 8. After going through initial shock and learning how to manage her new care to assure a ‘normal’ life the day-to-day watchful care became part of my family’s everyday life. Thankfully after nearly 6 years she has continued to be doing well through daily multiple doses of insulin and several finger pricked blood tests. We hope that one day a better solution or cure will be found for this disease that affects so many.
It is because of that hope that every fall since Callie’s diagnosis we have campaigned for support and participated in the national Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International Walk to Cure Diabetes. This series of events with two held in the New York area are a day of support and encouragement for people afflicted with diabetes as well as their family’s involved. In addition and of great importance in the weeks before and after the event are a time when we participating reach out and ask you out there to consider supporting JDRF by contributing to the Walk.
You may do that through an online donation by going to Support Callie Goodin in the 2010 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes.
My family and I will be participating in the October 3rd Battery Park JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, going from lower Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge to downtown Brooklyn and back. The roughly 6 mile event is a statement in support of the work and dedication of JDRF as well as a time of unity, reflection and encouragement for those living with diabetes as well as their family’s.
Another source to support the work of JDRF is through a CD that musical colleague Peter Thörn and I created in the spring of 2010, titled From Brooklyn to Glindran. The proceeds of our World Experimental Free Jazz Folk release will be donated to JDRF. Peter and I met through an online fretless guitar community in 2008, began working together live through NinJam. We decided to commit a series of NinJam sessions in the fall of 2009 towards a release that we would do as a benefit for JDRF.
From Brooklyn to Glindran, produced by Peter, friend and partner in the Chinapainting duo Daryl Shawn and myself, was released on April 6, 2010, the anniversary of my daughter’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes.
You may buy From Brooklyn to Glindran as a lossless audio (MP3 and other) download from Bandcamp at $9.99 USD by going to jimgoodinpeterthorn.bandcamp.com. There you will also have the option of purchasing a physical copy of the CD if you prefer.
Buying a download or CD copy of From Brooklyn to Glindran will go to benefit JDRF and support the research being done in seeking a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Thank you for considering either option to support the wonderful and advancing work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.
